When you visit Tacoma Washington, you also visit one of the most exciting regions in the country in Pierce County, Washington. With two military bases, a deep water port, art and history museums, Point Defiance Park, Puget Sound and Mount Rainier, it is easy to see how every one of Pierce County's 1,790 square miles can be so captivating.
Crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge on your way to Gig Harbor, you will pass over the remains of "Galloping Gertie", the famous undulating bridge that collapsed in 1940. It is the largest man-made structure to ever fall into the water (not that we're bragging). 120 feet below the surface, the ruins have been placed on the National Registry of Historical Places.
Mount Rainier is the most visited attraction in Washington, and the tallest volcano in the lower 48 states (14,410 feet high at the summit). Pierce County's #1 visitor attraction. Open all seasons -- call for specific hours of desired destination within park. Recreational activities include hiking, camping, fishing, bird-watching, inner-tubing cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Mount Rainier is one of the five most visited national parks in the U.S. with 2.2 million visitors a year. It is 378 square miles and includes the fourth highest peak in the U.S., with 27 named glaciers and 305 miles of hiking/nature trails.
